My Assistant Jeff

Last week I lost a great friend of 20+ years and my long time assistant Jeff Wilson to a sudden heart attack. I can't tell you how much my heart is breaking that my friend is gone.

Richie Headquarters will never be the same without Jeff. His favorite singer was Patsy Cline [with a close second of "The Winehouse" as he called her] so this little song is for him.

Be Here Now

I ran into a distant friend a couple weeks ago. She had battled some cancer a couple years ago and was doing lovely the last I saw her. So when I saw her enjoying a beer with a friend I didn't hesitate to ask "how is your health" when she told me it had returned and without much mercy this time. I think I went numb... I think she said something that I don't want to say out loud. Time seems to be very fleeting if I heard her correctly.

All I've thought about since I saw her is "what does she want to accomplish? What can we do to get her to that place before she leaves us?" I want to drive her to eat ice cream at the tip of Mexico if that's what she wants to do on a Tuesday afternoon I'm not joking about this. Though a Tuesday, might require a little planning on my part.

I saw this video today and was reminded that everyone should share their story. I am uplifted by people who get up everyday, even when they really don't want to and keep going.

I may be a middle.class.white.girl but I love Ice T. I have for years as in... I remember when Cop Killer came out [and the scandal] with Body Count and where the term OG came from - lets get that part clear.

I have a huge love for Public Enemy and Dr. Dre it seems odd to say it really, but I have always felt that they were telling the truth. It may have not been my truth, but theirs for sure.

I was thrilled to hear about this documentary. It's not about the chains, the cars, the houses or the Ho's it's about the music.

this sweet print from Bird Machine today made my heart melt. the story "a couple weeks ago i was preparing the container garden for springtime planting out in the vast 500-square-foot bird machine back yard, and noted that the largest pot was topped with a small pile of grass and... fur? upon closer inspection, we found a half dozen tiny bunnies, nested down happily. we watched them during the next week or two as they grew and eventually left the nest. the bird machine shop is located NEAR areas which are good rabbit territory, but i was surprised that any mother rabbit would specifically select OUR little concrete yard as the right place to build a nest. this enterprising mother decided to burrow into the tallest pot, which I thought was a pretty good idea. so now we have prints - eight screens, edition of 300, and they cost $30." you can purchase here

it's been a little crazy around here. two back to back shoots, one out of town. animals, babies, children, a dust storm, a sand storm and 4am call times pretty much sum up my last two weeks. Here's a little self portrait on the sand storm day I hid out in the RV when I could.

A few more adjustments this week and I hope to be back on track.

I hope you remembered someone this memorial day weekend who served our country. thinking of my grandfather and two uncles who have served, and soon-to-be... my nephew who will be a Navy something sooner than I would like.

4ORTY 3HREE

wish I had some witty story to tell but my 12+ hr days with more to come have sucked every last brain cell from my body. It is in fact my birthday today. I don't think I'll celebrate any more though, I think we should stop here. 43 is a decent number not too old or too young just sort of a good place to STOP don't you think? nod your head yes.

The only way I know time is passing anymore is to see other people's children. I saw a little girl that I use to carry around in my arms today and she's now 15 [going on 22] it's kind of shocking. I understand now, my friend's parents, always making a fuss about how big we were getting as young people. It's not about the child really but about the adult seeing time pass in someone else's eyes.

4ORTY 3HREE is a big year for me. reasons I can't really speak about just now but it's about a line in the sand and letting go for me. These are two things I'm not good at so it's a little rough.

two days, 5 kid talent, 3 dog talent, one accidental cat, 1000 cheerios on set, a bubble bath shot with the 1 year old that started out with tears and ended in giggles, gummy fish, cheese fish, peanut butter and jelly, one tree nut allergy, a naked baby running across the house.... that pretty much sums up the last 48 hrs on my photo shoot.

it was exhausting and awesome [as always]. one more day to go [product only] I wish I could show you shots but alas the product hasn't come out yet. I can show you the view from the bubble bath with the one year old. we were pretty in pink today.

I've talked about this process before and the store front in SF that has brought it back to the masses [I'm so happy about this!!]

Cool Hunting also thought it was pretty special and did a video documenting the process. omgosh I can't wait to go to SF and have a portrait done. The tones on these photos are so beautiful and the focal point is so lovely as it falls soft from the midpoint outward. I'm a junky for this stuff, what can I say.

back from our little cross country trip. buried with work [what else is new]. But top priority is that I need a new book. I plowed through the four my bestie gave me to read and nothing has really reached out to grab my attention.

I need a new book - what are you all reading? don't tell me that grey.softporn.whatever book that's so popular. I want a book to reach in and grab me by my heart and make me not put it down. The last two I read like that were The Help and Just Kids by Patti Smith [I actually just reread Just Kids because I loved it so much]
