Vine App
I've been using the Vine app for a couple months now. What is Vine? a mobile app that lets you make teeny 7 second videos and lets you do edits! and then sends them to your social media outlets. Supposedly, it lets you embed them as-is but I can't sort it out... I had to send them to You Tube so that I could show them here.
So here's my little studio for those wondering. AKA it's our garage, it's a glamorous life but someone's got to do it. My assistant Jamie is here with me in a couple of the clips. In two of the clips we were working on Ashkahn's prints at the time of filming.

How did I get here
I've been working on a daringly different promo series for my friend Eric Hameister for the past few months. We decided to do something sort of unheard of really... and that is send a photography promo with no image but of the story of how he got to this place through a series of the cameras used over his career.
Have you ever thought to yourself? How did I get here? ... a la Talking Heads

Photography has changed A LOT in the past 20 years since he started, heck... even in the last 5 years. Gone are the gianormous car budgets, the big show [car industry people will get that reference] and sometimes even the printing [my part] but the thing that remains for photographers is the love of the craft, love of the image, and the tech know-how to get a photo to work without huge amounts of retouching.
We're trying something different and that's always the scary part, the easy part is duplicating the same effort over and over.
[This is number 2 in a 5 part series - see number 1 here]

a little love today
it's always fun to get a little shout out on Twitter from cool folks. The Zoe Report made a little mention today. Now if my wardrobe was equally as cool I'd be set.

Love
I have gay friends who have had longer, more successful relationships than myself and my parents combined.
I hope that one day when I'm 80 and I'm talking to a young person about their history lessons, that they'll talk about this day as we talk about the civil rights movement now. How could we have been so dumb? How did we let this go on for so long?
Love is equal. end of story.

sneak peek: in the studio
My husband says it's his favorite of my work "down to the envelope". I might have to agree, I'm not sure what that means for my own invite a year + ago!
I still haven't sorted out why Blogger has changed the large image size postings. click this bad boy to enlarge to it's glory.

new in the studio
Part 1 of 5 series for photographer Eric Hameister. We're looking back at his career through his cameras 1979 "dad's camera" was his first. We're trying something different than the standard old 'photo postcard' and telling the story of how he got here.

New in the shop: Happy Wife, Happy Life
An office I use to work in had some fairly sassy women in it. One day my boss was griping about something his wife had done and a coworker said to him "as soon as you realize you were BORN WRONG you're life will become so much easier" We all had a good laugh about it but for years he repeated that mantra with a chuckle. It's true though, yes? Happy Wife, Happy Life?
Perfect for a new couple's wedding, anniversary or ummm, I'm sorry I was a bonehead type of moment.

Saatchi art online
I just discovered Saatchionline.com a site dedicated to art and emerging artists. The London gallery [and I believe part of the advertising agency as well?] has long promoted art and artists around the world. Their online content helps emerging artist post and sell their art to a higher end buyer than say Etsy. Here are some of my recent favorites:

I bought a cheese board
I couldn't help it. It was their story I had to have one.
HERRIOTT GRACE is a venture of father and daughter, and this is their story.
Lance and Nikole Herriott live 3400 kilometers apart: his workshop is in Victoria, British Columbia, and her studio is in Toronto, Ontario. When she first made her home more than halfway across the country, they started to send packages back and forth.
In some of those packages, Lance began to include his own hand carved spoons. He had been collecting wood since the early seventies, and used his best pieces for these gifts. Nikole loved them; their balance and shape, the pieces were made with unmistakable care. She knew they were something special.
One day it dawned on her that others might appreciate her father’s talent as she did, so Nikole asked if he would ever want to share his work. Lance took a few days to think about it. And, after some convincing, he agreed to her plan, but only with people that understood and cared about the time and effort spent on each piece.
She told him, “Leave it to me, I know just the sort.”
And with that, Herriott Grace was born.
In the three years since, their small shop has grown to selling an array of hand carved and hand turned wooden objects, including spoons, bowls, pedestals, candy dishes, serving boards, rolling pins, plates and mortar and pestle sets. All are one of a kind and made entirely of salvaged, chemical-free wood, ranging in type, age, and origin. None are exactly the same, and thus none are perfect. But the slight imperfections are an effect of the handmade quality. They’ve also introduced a select line of exclusive porcelain dishware. The ceramic pieces are cast in small runs, and boast the rustic, tactile beauty for which their brand is known.
They also make, by hand, kitchen linens, cake flags, birthday candles, beeswax salve and cookie cutters.
Lance still lives in Victoria, and still sends packages to Nikole in Toronto. Now, she styles and photographs those pieces he sends, and together they are Herriott Grace.

Vat of ink
I can't tell you what I was doing today but to say that I was at a very large press. Spotted on their loading dock was a vat of ink 6ft high and at least 3 ft wide. I imagine it's a special mix for DKNY, that lovely taxi cab yellow of theirs. My Pantone book doesn't go up in the 9000's to check.
In my printing I only use about a half dollar size worth of ink [depending on coverage and number of prints]. I have 1 lb cans in my studio I've had for 4+ years. This vat seems very daunting!

Some Days
Some days surprise me. You think your day will be ordinary and then everything just up and shifts. Ever have one of those? Monday began like that for me. It didn't start off so well and to be honest I wasn't in the best of moods. I had a client booked this afternoon for some time so I put my game face on, as he was coming by to watch / assist.
The groom's father was my client in this case. A retired printer and a calligrapher. I was already curious about this wonderful man who I helped through the process of setting up his son's files and plates. We spent the afternoon together today and he told me about the home he and his wife restored over 8 summers in the SW part of France, his travels as a young man around the world and being in Cuba just before Castro was in power. We talked about France, food and wine about paper and hand work.
It was such an unexpected gift. I hugged him goodbye and we're planning to meet up again soon.

Vine App
I'm hanging with the cool kids on Vine as of yesterday. What is Vine? an app similar to twitter and instagram where you can post quick 7 second videos. Because we all don't have enough to do online right? Lets try it out and see what happens.
I was trying to upload my printing video I just made but alas I'll need a day or two to sort that out. Meanwhile download the Vine App at the apple store you can look for me as @richiedesigns.

art accidents
when I'm setting up a job I often use old sheets with other items on them and just overprint till the ink gets up to where I need it to be. Sometimes these overprints make the best accidental art.
More sleep and neon lips make for an interesting combo.
if you followed me on instagram you would see cool sh*t like this all the time well sometimes. @richiedesigns

special project
I assembled a special wedding gift design project this weekend. A friend contacted me and said can you turn these lyrics into a poster for some friends getting married? black / white and modern. Voilá. [The actual lyrics are small and not visible from this vantage point.]
I'm not going to pretend to be a framer thought. I always have to cut two before I get it right. Today was no exception. Not to mention my office having been blown up in the process.
Now, if it would only ship safely to it's destination I would be so happy.
